Maturation takes place in two carefully coordinated phases: First, the grain and malt whiskeys mature separately in ex-bourbon casks, maintaining a precise 3:1 ratio in favor of the grain.<br><br>This initial maturation period can last up to six years and allows the whiskeys to develop their individual flavor profiles.
