Interestingly, we owe it to an Italian spirits expert. Marco Savio initially decided to have products from his Malecon and Malteco brands manufactured by a distillery in Guatemala. However, the Ron Malteco Seleccion 1992 rum, like the other quality products of this brand, is now produced as rum from Panama by another distillery. This old bottling, on the other hand, comes from the maestros roneros in Guatemala. The company relied neither on sugar cane juice as in Rhum Agricole nor on molasses as in commercial rum from the Caribbean. Instead, sugarcane honey was used for distillation in a continuous column still manner.
