<p><strong>This ‘oude’ (literally, ‘old’) genever was created by the Bokma family in 1826 in the Frisian capital of Leeuwarden. ‘Bok’ means a male goat, hence the goat emblem on the crest.</strong></p><p>Klaas Bokkeszoon owned a corn mill and a public house and so it was almost natural that his son Freerk Klaaseszoon Bokma established his own distillery, which he named ‘The Source’.<br><br>Convinced that the full-bodied contents of a Bokma bottle were already ‘round’ enough, in 1894 Freerk’s son Pieter designed a unique square bottle, predating other famous quadrilaterals.<br><br>Oude genevers, despite the name, are not aged. They are so called because they are traditional, old-style genevers, as opposed to the more modern ‘jonge’ genevers. Oude genevers must contain at least 15% malt-wine and often feature more botanicals than jonge styles.<br>&nbsp;</p><h3><strong>Appearance:</strong></h3><p>Clear, pale straw yellow with a faint green tinge.</p><h3><strong>Aroma:</strong></h3><p>Nutty oily nose with fresh hay bales, olive oil and gentle warm cinnamon.</p><h3><strong>Taste:</strong></h3><p>Slightly oily mouth feel. Light cinnamon and black pepper spice, brazil nut and hazelnut with touch of white grape, apple and faint tinned pineapple.</p><h3><strong>Aftertaste:</strong></h3><p>Cloves, brazil nut and spicy dry oak with lingering peppery olive oil.</p>
