<p>Woodland – Sauerland Dry Gin “The Navy Strength” combines our typical, woody Sauerland aroma with clear hints of Mediterranean, citrus notes and tasty heartiness. These combine with the powerful alcohol content to create a highly intense character, whose juiciness gives volume to cocktails and long drinks.</p><p>In the 18th century, the Royal Navy issued a regulation requiring every ship to carry a certain amount of gin on board. At that time, gin was considered a kind of panacea for all illnesses at sea. After a while, however, the Navy began to feel that some of the distillers were watering the gin to maximize their profits.</p><p>Gin and gunpowder were often stored right next to each other below deck. Because of this fact, some clever sailors developed a method to prove whether the gin was watered down or not. If they poured gin over the gunpowder and it still caught fire, it was proven that the gin was of the promised quality.</p><p>This method later became known as “navy strength proof”. The gunpowder only ignited if the gin was bottled with an alcohol content of 57.15 percent.<br>&nbsp;</p>
